“We want to set the standard for the region” was the brief given to THG when creating the residential development to be known as ‘The Ridge Urban Village’.
The ambitious joint venture between Intrapac and Peet Ltd. saw THG given the challenge of creating a 600 dwelling development that had “heart”. Demonstrating a range of services including Project Management, Planning, Surveying, Urban Design, Urban and Social Economics and Landscape Architecture, THG developed a novel concept, a 1 hectare village square and public amphitheatre that will encourage community development programs such as market stalls, open air theatres and social functions. This village heart will is set to have a big impact on urban design, encouraging the creation of diverse residential environments where people can live work and play.
With the support of the Logan Municipality and the client, THG was able to incorporate a range of residential typologies and varying affordability levels, creating a mixed use development that features commercial opportunities including cafes, small scale offices and retail.
Creating a village on the site was not without challenges. The site had a number of environmental constraints - slopes, gullies, undulating hills and a view line that had to be maintained. Understanding that a sense of space comes from more than just the buildings, THG conducted a full site analysis on the environment of the area. Instead of fighting this environment THG worked with it, creating rich open space features in prominent areas and using native vegetation to enhance the natural beauty of the area.
Our landscape architecture also took into consideration pedestrian connectivity throughout the site, particularly between parkland areas. Incorporating elements such as bridges, park structures and play equipment and pedestrian and cycle paths all contributed to creating a sense of community.
