The $2 billion North South Bypass Clem Jones Tunnel (CLEM 7) project was the first component of the Lord Mayor’s TransApex vision to reduce deficiencies in Brisbane’s road network. The project comprises nearly seven kilometres of roadway, with two 4.8-kilometre twin lane tunnels. David Scassola (AILA), Head of THG’s Landscape Architecture team was part of the appointed development team to undertake all urban planning, landscape architecture, urban design and architecture for both the bid phase and the delivery phase of the CLEM 7. The team were responsible for producing high quality visualisations of the proposals, which have been used extensively in media coverage and community consultation.

While creating a strong signature for the project with emphasis on quality design, the challenge was to recognise the complexity of the project’s interface within Brisbane’s inner city and to lead in identifying,  pursuing and delivering opportunities for urban regeneration, urban design, open space planning and landscape design.

Completed in 2010, the CLEM 7 carries a significant number of vehicles per day underneath the city, reducing surface traffic and enabling a series of urban enhancements in adjacent suburbs. New surface connections have been introduced and significant social and urban enhancements achieved.
