Inner Northern Busway

THG’s Head of Landscape Architecture, David Scassola (AILA), was part of the project team that undertook the urban design, planning and landscape architecture for the Inner Northern Busway. The 1.2-kilometre busway, 500 metres of which is underground tunnel, is embedded in an area of Brisbane’s City centre rich with significant cultural heritage values and a history of urban built form. It also overlays one of the city’s fastest growth areas, particularly regarding changes to land use, demographic mix, and development opportunities. A key goal for the design and planning of the busway was to provide a ‘legacy’ of quality urban design with the intention to improve the public domain and pedestrian and cyclist connectivity.

The project details include but are not limited to the creation of new green public spaces including Albert Street Plaza and Albert Street extension to the Queens Street Mall, the revitalisation of existing public space in Roma Street Forum and delivering the Caxton Roma Pedestrian Link and the CBD’s first cycle centre. The project also involved the conservation of important historical, cultural and environmental features including two 80-year old fig trees and the Wheat Creek culvert.
