Working with our client, THG developed a compelling case for presentation to Queensland Transport and Queensland Rail to demonstrate the importance of bringing forward the construction of the Pimpama rail station to facilitate the creation of a transit-oriented community. This project involved rigorous assessment of population growth and associated likely patronage levels, taking into account existing and planned development approvals and development constraints within the catchment area and considerable research on cultures of early adoption of public transport infrastructure. An important outcome of this project was a series of maps demonstrating how population growth would occur within the catchment at five-year intervals over time from 2006 to 2031.
The concept behind this early adoption considers the question - How do you ensure that public transport is embraced by the community? Research has shown that if you start out driving your car to work, it’s unlikely you will change the habit even if a train station is built down the road. Bringing forward the construction of the Pimpama train station to coincide with the substantial development to occur in the catchment would result in a much higher adoption of the infrastructure, which has obvious beneficial flow-on effects to the environment, traffic congestion, petrol prices and community feel.
